Mississippi DOT warns nine children have died in hot cars this year

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said nine children have died from heatstroke after being left in vehicles this year and urged motorists to take precautions.

MDOT warned that hot temperatures are forecast and asked the public to do everything possible to keep children safe, according to a social media post from the agency.

The agency advised motorists to never leave children or pets alone in vehicles for any amount of time and to check the back seat before locking a vehicle, MDOT said.

MDOT posted the warning on social media using hashtags that included #MSwx, #HeatSafety, #ChildSafety, #CheckTheBackSeat, #PetSafety and #HeatstrokeKills, the agency said.
