Mississippi Department of Transportation Celebrates National Maritime Day
The Mississippi Department of Transportation is celebrating National Maritime Day by emphasizing its commitment to developing the state’s water transportation infrastructure.
MDOT administers programs such as the Port Multi-Modal Transportation Improvement Program and the Strategic Multi-Modal Investments Fund to enhance the 16 publicly owned ports across Mississippi, supporting economic growth and freight movement.
One port featured is the Port of Greenville, where approximately 5.2 million tons of cargo are trans-loaded annually, according to the Washington County Economic Alliance. The port handles a variety of goods, including agricultural products like corn, wheat, soybeans, and rice, as well as fuels, chemicals, steel, and lumber.
MDOT officials said these efforts are vital to maintaining a robust waterborne industry that benefits Mississippi’s economy and regional development.
