Mississippi Department of Transportation conducts spring highway cleanups
The Mississippi Department of Transportation said it organized a series of spring cleanups along state highways this month, timed with Earth Day on April 22 and Keep America Beautiful Month in April.
The department said the events, held in partnership with Keep Mississippi Beautiful, were part of the national Great American Cleanup campaign. MDOT said employees stepped away from normal duties for a day to pick up litter from highly visible areas.
Since 1989, MDOT said, the “Trash Bash” events have aimed to draw public attention to the effects of roadway litter. The department said thousands of bags of trash are removed from state roadsides each year as a result.
MDOT said it was proud of employees and community volunteers who took part in this year’s cleanups and called the participation a positive example of civic engagement.
