Mississippi DOT warns of severe storms, urges travel caution
The Mississippi Department of Transportation warned in a social media post that significant storms capable of producing high winds, tornadoes and hail were forecast for large portions of the state on the evening of April 28, 2026.
MDOT urged motorists to check the MDOT Traffic app or MDOTtraffic.com before driving to learn conditions on their routes, the department said. It warned that high winds can knock down trees and power lines, creating unreported hazards on roadways.
The department advised drivers not to attempt to outrun a tornado in a vehicle and to seek sturdy shelter, not an overpass, if a tornado threatens. MDOT also said hail causes more damage to a moving vehicle than to a parked one and urged people to get under shelter rather than drive through hail.
MDOT recommended getting weather updates from trusted sources such as NOAA’s National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center and following the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency for state emergency communications, the post said. The department also urged residents to check on family and neighbors and to stay safe.
