NWS Memphis adds probabilistic HeatRisk forecasts for summer
The U.S. National Weather Service in Memphis said it has added probabilistic HeatRisk forecasts for the summer to give users more context about heat threats.
The new product provides likelihoods for five HeatRisk categories — “Little/None,” “Minor,” “Moderate,” “Major” and “Extreme” — the agency said.
The service said the probabilistic forecasts can help event planners and the public gauge the chance a forecasted category will rise. For example, the agency said a forecast showing “Moderate” could still have a measurable probability of upgrading to “Major.”
NWS Memphis said users can select a category such as “Major,” zoom to their town and read a likelihood next to the cursor. Clicking a location produces a pop-up with a detailed weekly HeatRisk forecast and probability graphs, the agency said.
The agency said the tool is another resource to help people stay safe this summer and pointed users to the Weather Prediction Center’s HeatRisk page: https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heatrisk/probs/.
