U.S. 80 near Chunky to close May 18 for bridge replacements, MDOT says

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) said both directions of U.S. 80 will be closed beginning Monday, May 18, 2026, approximately one mile east of Adams Street in Chunky at the second crossing over the Chunky River in Lauderdale County. MDOT said the closure will remain in place through 2027.

MDOT said the closure is part of a project to replace several bridges on U.S. 80 in Newton and Lauderdale counties.

Traffic control and detour signage will be in place to provide access to Interstate 20 and to route traffic around the closure, MDOT said. The agency advised drivers to slow down and be on alert for posted signs and road crews for the duration of the project.
