Bryce Harper hits for cycle as Phillies rout Mets 15-3
The Philadelphia Phillies continued their resurgence Saturday with a 15-3 victory over the New York Mets, highlighted by standout performances from Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
Harper hit for the cycle, marking his first career cycle and the 11th in franchise history. He doubled in the third inning, singled in the fifth, and hit a two-run triple to the left-center gap. Harper’s solo home run in the first inning was his 16th of the season.
Schwarber powered the Phillies’ attack with three home runs, including two in the third inning. His first blast traveled 456 feet, and his second measured 457 feet off Mets reliever Cionel Pérez. Schwarber added a two-run homer in the seventh. His performance marked his fifth career three-homer game and boosted his season total to 28, leading the majors.
Pitcher Cristopher Sanchez allowed one earned run over six innings, lowering his ERA to 1.80. It marked his 23rd consecutive start at Citizens Bank Park in which he allowed two or fewer earned runs, the second-longest streak at the ballpark since 1913, behind Jacob deGrom’s 24 at Citi Field.
Schwarber became the 67th player in major league history and the second this season to hit multiple home runs in a single inning. He joins Houston’s Yordan Alvarez, who accomplished the feat on June 12. Schwarber is also the fourth Phillies player to hit two homers in one inning, joining Trea Turner, Von Hayes, and Andy Seminick.
The teams will conclude their three-game series Sunday night with a game scheduled to start at 7:20 p.m. Eastern Time.
