Christopher Nolan confirms ‘The Odyssey’ casting, including Travis Scott

Christopher Nolan confirmed casting and production details for his upcoming film “The Odyssey” in an interview published Tuesday by Time. The film, set for release July 17, will star Matt Damon as Odysseus, and includes Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron and Elliot Page, Time reported.

In the interview, Damon said Nolan was “very faithful to Homer because that’s not somebody you rewrite,” according to Time. The director told Time that his crew built a “genuinely seaworthy” ship for scenes of Odysseus and his crew sailing the Mediterranean.

Time reported that Nolan instructed composer Ludwig Göransson not to use an orchestra for the score. Göransson told the magazine, “It’s not like the orchestra existed back then,” while Nolan said he cast rapper Travis Scott to “nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap,” Time wrote.

Time also reported that Lupita Nyong’o will play Helen. The combination of Nolan’s research-driven production choices and casting choices such as Nyong’o and Scott prompted criticism and confusion from some commentators and social media users, according to coverage and response following the Time interview.

Nolan is known for large-scale, technically ambitious films including “The Dark Knight,” “Inception,” “Dunkirk” and “Oppenheimer.” Time’s interview said Nolan framed his approach to “The Odyssey” as an effort to balance fidelity to Homer with thematic reinterpretation.
