Ed Orgeron returns to LSU as special assistant for Lane Kiffin’s staff

Ed Orgeron is returning to LSU as a special assistant to recruiting and defense, working under Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin. The move comes after Orgeron spent time outside college football following his departure from LSU in 2021, which included a $17.1 million buyout, according to sources.

Orgeron led LSU to a national championship in 2019 during his six-year tenure as head coach. His return to the program was confirmed by Kiffin, who praised Orgeron’s recruiting ability and understanding of LSU’s culture.

“I’m excited to bring Coach Orgeron back to LSU,” Kiffin said. “He brings us tremendous value with his ability to recruit elite players nationally, especially in Louisiana. He understands my expectations and our commitment to a championship program.”

Orgeron, who was fired in 2021, joked about the changes in college athletics, saying, “Back then, we used to walk through the back door with the cash. Now we just walk through the front door with the cash,” during an appearance on Bussin’ With The Boys podcast.

The reunion also highlights a long history between Kiffin and Orgeron, dating back to their days coaching together at USC and Tennessee. Kiffin previously lured Orgeron away from the NFL when he accepted the Tennessee job in 2009. Their professional relationship has often been marked by humor and camaraderie, even amid the chaos typical of college football.

Additionally, former USC colleague Tee Martin has joined Kiffin’s staff at LSU, completing a reunion of sorts that traces back to their USC days. The arrangement is expected to generate interest and speculation among fans and analysts, given the pair’s colorful history and Orgeron’s reputation as a top recruiter and defensive strategist.

This latest move adds another chapter to Kiffin’s unconventional tenure at LSU, promising an entertaining era ahead on the Bayou, regardless of the outcome.
