Everett Wess wins Democratic Senate runoff in Alabama

Former Judge Everett Wess won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Alabama, defeating small-business owner Dakarai Larriett in a runoff, The Associated Press reported Tuesday night. Wess will run to succeed Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor this year, The Associated Press reported.

Wess and Larriett finished first and second in last month’s primary in a four-candidate field. Because no candidate topped 50 percent, the top two advanced to the runoff, The Associated Press reported.

On the Republican side, Rep. Barry Moore, who was backed by President Donald Trump, defeated former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson in the GOP runoff Tuesday, The Associated Press reported. The Associated Press said Wess is expected to be the clear underdog in the general election against the Republican nominee.

Except for Democrat Doug Jones’ 2017 special-election victory, it has been more than three decades since a Democrat won a U.S. Senate race in Alabama, The Associated Press reported. Tuberville, a former Auburn University head football coach, is running for governor rather than seeking re-election, The Associated Press reported.
