Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy give differing accounts of Vikings’ QB room

Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy offered markedly different descriptions of their relationship at a Minnesota Vikings practice, prompting fresh attention to the team’s quarterback competition, Fox News reported.

Murray called the pairing “great” and said he has been trying to help the younger quarterback. “I know he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him. I’ve played seven years now, going onto eight,” Murray said, according to Fox News. “Give him any knowledge that he needs. Again, we’re both competitors, and I know we both want what’s best for the team.”

McCarthy, the Vikings’ 2025 first-round pick, gave a different take. “It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” he said. When asked whether there was any awkwardness, McCarthy added: “Awkwardness? It’s just like the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room. It’s just kinda how it is, so I wouldn’t say there’s any awkwardness,” Fox News reported.

McCarthy missed his rookie year with a knee injury and threw for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 57.6% of his passes in 10 games last season, Fox News reported. The Vikings signed Murray this offseason for a veteran presence, and many project Murray as the leading candidate to start in Week 1, Fox News said.

The Vikings finished 9-8 last season and missed the playoffs in coach Kevin O’Connell’s fourth year. The team had gone 14-3 the previous season with Sam Darnold at quarterback; Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks and helped lead them to a Super Bowl LX victory, Fox News reported.
