According to the Highway Department, the decision followed a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) inspection that found structural problems with the bridge. Rather than patch the old span, the county plans to replace it entirely.
Why the Sain Road Bridge Is Closing
TDOT routinely inspects public bridges across Tennessee, including those on county-maintained roads. When inspectors find structural issues serious enough, a bridge can be posted with weight limits or closed outright until repairs or replacement are complete. In this case, the Highway Department said the inspection results led to a full closure.
The replacement bridge will be a fully concrete structure. The project is being paid for through State Aid Route funding, a state program that helps counties maintain and rebuild roads and bridges on designated routes.

Cliff Road to Highway 18 South
Drivers who regularly use Sain Road should plan extra travel time, especially school bus families, farm traffic, and anyone commuting to work in Bolivar or beyond. Emergency responders are also typically notified of long-term closures so they can plan alternate routes.
How Long the Closure Could Last
The Highway Department has not set an exact reopening date. It said the closure could last up to one year, depending on how quickly the replacement project moves through the state process and construction. No contractor has been publicly named yet.
The department said it is working with the state to move the project along as quickly as possible and apologized for the inconvenience the closure may cause residents.
