The National Weather Service in Memphis, Tennessee, said some relief from the heat is expected today, but parts of east-central Arkansas and north Mississippi could still experience heat indices above 105 degrees.
Forecasters in Memphis warned that heat index values of 105 degrees or higher are possible in those areas and advised residents to take precautions.
The agency recommended staying in air-conditioned locations, drinking plenty of fluids and checking on vulnerable people and animals.
The National Weather Service specifically urged people to watch out for pets, infants and the elderly and to take steps to avoid heat-related illness.
