NWS Memphis warns of dangerous heat, evening storm risk

The National Weather Service in Memphis, Tennessee, warned Monday that dangerously hot conditions are expected over the next few days, with an Excessive Heat Warning and a Heat Advisory in effect from 11 a.m. today through 8 p.m. Friday.

The agency said heat indices could reach between 105 and 112 degrees Fahrenheit this afternoon and that overnight lows will provide little relief, hovering around a muggy 80 degrees. The NWS advised residents to stay hydrated, take breaks in air conditioning and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.

The forecast office also said it is tracking a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms this evening, primarily across West Tennessee and the Missouri Bootheel. The NWS said damaging winds would be the main threat from any storms that develop.

The NWS urged people in the affected areas to have a way to receive weather alerts tonight and to follow local guidance as conditions evolve.
