Awareness day urges drivers to find blue-and-white ENS signs

Organizers of ENS Sign Awareness Day said the blue-and-white ENS signs posted at railroad crossings are meant to help drivers get help quickly if a vehicle becomes stuck on the tracks.

Safety promoters said using the signs in an emergency — such as a stalled car or other trouble on the rails — can save lives when seconds count.

They advised motorists to get everyone out of the vehicle first. If no train is approaching, drivers should locate the nearby blue-and-white ENS sign and use the information on it to notify railroad personnel or emergency responders, organizers said.

Organizers said the observance is held annually and is being marked today to remind the public how to recognize and use ENS signs in a crisis.
