MDOT crews clear storm debris as several south Mississippi roads remain blocked
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) said this morning that crews were continuing cleanup efforts after severe overnight storms in south Mississippi brought down trees and power lines.
MDOT said U.S. 51 between U.S. 84 and Monticello Street in Lincoln County is blocked by downed power lines and debris. Mississippi Highway 184 between U.S. 84 and Highway 43 in Lawrence County was blocked by fallen utility lines, the agency said.
Portions of Mississippi Highway 583 at Douglas Trail in Lincoln County remained blocked as crews worked to remove storm debris and restore safe passage, MDOT said. Although Interstate 55 between Brookhaven and Bogue Chitto is open, drivers should anticipate temporary shoulder or lane closures as crews push remaining debris from the roadway, the agency added.
MDOT urged motorists to avoid travel in the affected areas unless necessary and to allow space for emergency responders, utility crews and MDOT maintenance forces. The agency’s post included tags for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and Gov. Tate Reeves.
