Mississippi offering 1942 Bogue Homa Creek bridge for relocation

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is offering the State Highway 42 Bridge No. 76.2 at Bogue Homa Creek in Perry County to the public for relocation, preservation and maintenance, MDOT said. Formal proposals are due May 29, 2026.

MDOT described the structure as a steel truss bridge built in 1942 that is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, according to the agency.

MDOT said proposals must show plans for removal, transport, installation and perpetual preservation, and must demonstrate the financial capability to carry out those plans. Proposals will be reviewed by MDOT, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Federal Highway Administration, MDOT said. Removal must comply with federal regulations.

MDOT said a successful relocation proposal will be reimbursed for relocation costs up to the agency’s estimated demolition cost. The transfer deed will include preservation covenants requiring owners to preserve and maintain the structure and its architectural elements in accordance with standards established by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Potential recipients will assume all legal and financial responsibilities for the bridge, MDOT said.

Formal proposals should be submitted to Billy Owen, MDOT district engineer, at P.O. Box 551, Hattiesburg, MS 39403. MDOT provided (601) 544-6511 for inquiries.
