An unnamed state office said it found millions in taxpayer dollars funneled to nonprofits with vague plans and weak monitoring, prompting creation of a searchable spending dashboard.

The Cut-Off will hold a Back-to-School Bash Saturday, Aug. 15, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 204 S. Commerce St. in Ripley. Organizers said the event will include face painting, games, pop-up vendors, food trucks and a school supply giveaway.

Organizers said an outdoor screening of “Zootopia 2” will begin at dusk Friday, Aug. 14, at The Cut-Off, 204 South Commerce Street in Ripley, Mississippi. Rebel Services, LLC is sponsoring the event, organizers said.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said a progress report shows numerous completed projects and continued work across its western District 3, the agency said.

Tupelo police arrested a 26-year-old man on Aug. 5 and charged him with three counts of burglary of a commercial building after investigators linked him to three mid-July break-ins at Eagle Gas Station, the department said.

Organizers said a new rotation of adult education classes aimed at adults seeking a high school equivalency, job skills or new careers will begin Monday, Aug. 10, at 8 a.m. Registration is available online.

Several defendants received prison sentences for methamphetamine offenses in Lee County Circuit Court last week, including a habitual offender and a defendant with a 60-year sentence.

A notice said maintenance on the Jackson, Tenn., National Weather Radio transmitter will begin Monday, Aug. 10, and continue through Wednesday, Aug. 12.

The National Weather Service in Memphis said a Heat Advisory is in effect for tomorrow across much of the Mid-South, with heat indices of 105 degrees or higher expected and dangerous heat persisting for at least seven days.

The Batesville Driver Service Bureau said it will be closed for repairs for the remainder of the day and will resume operations at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Customers were directed to nearby offices in Oxford and Grenada.

The U.S. National Weather Service office in Memphis said a Heat Advisory will be in effect Monday for areas near and west of the Mississippi River, with heat indices expected to reach 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
