Reeves appoints Craig Treadway as Mississippi circuit judge, reopens qualifying period
Jackson, Miss. — Gov. Tate Reeves has appointed Craig Treadway of Olive Branch as the new circuit judge for Mississippi’s 21st Circuit Court District, Place 2. The appointment fills a vacancy created when Judge Celeste Embry Wilson resigned on Aug. 1 to join the Mississippi Supreme Court, according to a news release from the governor’s office.
Reeves praised Treadway’s legal background and public service experience. “His decades of experience as an attorney, combined with his service as a prosecutor and as a county and youth court judge, make him an outstanding choice to serve the people of the 21st Circuit Court District,” the governor said.
Since his appointment as county court judge in DeSoto County in 2017, Treadway has presided over youth court, civil matters, and civil and criminal appeals. Before becoming a judge, he worked as a prosecutor and public defender for DeSoto County and spent more than 10 years in private practice representing clients in Mississippi courts. Treadway earned his law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi.
His appointment begins Sept. 1 and will cover the remainder of the current four-year term, the release said. In addition, Reeves issued a proclamation reopening the qualifying period for candidates seeking the same circuit judge position. The period will be open for seven days, ending at 5 p.m. on Aug. 25. Candidates wishing to run in the Nov. 3 general election must file qualifying papers with the Mississippi State Board of Election Commissioners.
