Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves canceled a planned special legislative session to consider redrawing the state’s four congressional districts, a move Mississippi Today said likely preserves the majority-Black seat held by Rep. Bennie Thompson.

Charles Rugg, who built Belhaven University’s basketball program and influenced generations of coaches and players, died Thursday at 94, sportswriter Rick Cleveland reported.

Since 2013, nearly 70,000 students have left Mississippi public schools, prompting fears of budget cuts and school closures as districts struggle with declining enrollment and state funding changes.
