Today marks the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, recognizing the 2,977 lives lost and the 415 first responders who sacrificed everything.

Forecasters say isolated severe storms and damaging wind gusts are possible in parts of Mississippi today, with the greatest threat between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Blue Mountain Christian University said construction continued this week on the Center for Grace & Healing, with interior casework, glazing and exterior masonry among the tasks under way.

The Tupelo Police Department said Friday it remembered the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and honored first responders and military personnel who served in the years that followed.

South Green Street near Daybrite Drive reopened, a traffic alert said, after an 18-wheeler struck a light pole. The alert had urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes until the roadway was safe.

A traffic alert said I-22 eastbound near Highway 45 is closed in both lanes after a crash. Motorists were urged to use caution and seek alternate routes.

Commemorations marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as organizers and officials called for remembrance of victims, first responders and emergency personnel.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said the Disaster Service Center in Hancock County will close permanently at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Residents can seek assistance at centers in Harrison, Pearl River or Stone counties, and the deadline to apply is Oct. 3.

MDPS said it paused to remember those killed on Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor first responders, law enforcement, service members and everyday Americans who displayed courage.

Forecasters said the marginal risk for severe storms was expanded to cover most of the Mid-South today, with damaging winds the primary threat and localized flash flooding a secondary concern.
